Mortlach has one main aspect that sets it apart from the rest of Diageo's portfolio: it's all about the sherry casks. The 12-year-old has a touch of American oak, but other bottles in the distillery range focus on rich, sherry-ripened flavors that pair well with Mortlach's meaty spirits.

This whiskey, however, is just the opposite, stripped back and focused on original oak and refill casks. This may be a bit of a shock to traditional Mortlach fans, but since my favorite whiskey from the distillery is the now discontinued (and probably sold out - not many of them) 100% Bourbon Barrel Mortlach 25 Year Old, I'm curious.

Aroma: Brown sugar oatmeal cookies, ginger spice and boiled fruity sweets. Nuttiness emerges along with toffee, caramel sauce and a hint of wood smoke. The scent of flowers wafts around, along with the digestive biscuits.

Taste: Nut crisp, candied lemon and vanilla cream, accompanied by notes of chocolate sauce and raisin jam. The spice is rounded out along with some darker oak notes, brown sugar and custard. Baked apples and pears brought the rear.

Finish: Vanilla cream and applesauce, followed by richness and finish.

Comments: Even with the sherry removed, Mortlach is still a bit of a beast. A meaty spirit, heavy with some balanced creamy barrel character.
