The history of one of the largest sherry wineries today can be traced back to March 8, 1760, when King Carlos III of Spain wrote a letter officially appointing Don Joaquín Manuel, Vice-Admiral of the Spanish Royal Armada. Villena as "Marquis del Real Tesoro".

When his fleet was attacked by pirate ships, the king awarded Don Joaquin this title as a reward for his victory. Not wanting to lose any of the crown treasure his ships carried, Don Joaquin used the silver from his own Order of Succession to create munitions.

In 1897, King Alfonso XIII awarded the unmentioned title of Marques Del Real Tesoro to the grandson of the first Marquis, who founded the brand name with the title of MARQUES DEL REAL TESORO.
